Some of Our Bliss Family

“After my ex-husband cheated on me 3 years ago. it even shocked my friends. It shocked us all. So they just scooped me up. It was uplifting. When women connect with other women, it creates a bond that is beyond your own self discovery. It becomes something bigger, a true authentic #friendship. It’s enough to have just one true friend.

I’m here with my girlfriends, my dear friends. I’ve known them since Grade 9. I can’t afford to do stuff like this. I have to put money into the business. But like I said, magic money comes all the time. My girlfriends wanted me to come, so they all pitched in and brought me here. Having close friends is so empowering. I have such gratitude. I wouldn’t be who I am without my girlfriends. A guy – maybe here, maybe not. But your girlfriends, they stick with you.”

“I had first heard about Bliss from a friend; she and I have a writing group together. We figured we would go, and if we didn’t like it we would just go find someplace to write. I had been depressed and miserable. I was in a bad place.

What started my transformation was seeing other women in the same position as me who are struggling to find out who they are. I’m a mom and I’m a wife, and I’m a daughter, but who am I as a person? Something opened up within me to take back that power, to realize that the possibilities of me are endless. That realization was mind-blowing.

Before Bliss, my self confidence was in the garbage. I gained so much confidence from empowering myself through this process that I wanted to help empower other women. I developed a presentation called ‘Journaling: A Path to Finding Your Inner Compass.’ I was nervous; I fumbled and it didn’t go as well as I practiced in the car. But still, I did it. I overcame that fear of speaking in front of people and realized that people might want to hear what I have to say. It might empower them and show them that they’re not alone.

When there’s someone who is thinking about coming or nervous about it, I tell them: you get back what you put into it. If you have an inclination to go, that’s your inner spirit telling you ‘go.’ Spend that time on you. Relax. Listen to yourself. ”

“At first I didn’t connect with the name ‘Bliss B4 Laundry.’ I actually like doing laundry. But I did connect with the concept: the sense of women building community together, of using and sharing their skills and connecting with each other through everyday tasks like cooking. It brought me back to when I lived in an intentional community, a cooperative cohousing community. In that context you embrace working with adults in a different way in your life. You make decisions collaboratively and try to understand each other as you work together. So this reminds me of how people can choose to be together and create community in small ways or in big ways.”

“I was looking forward to connecting with other people. I don’t have a lot of close female friends and I felt this was a way to get to know more women. And to laugh, to be honest. One of the best things that’s happened so far is that I’ve laughed more this weekend than I have in ages. It’s a great feeling just to be comfortable doing that.

I went cross country skiing, which I haven’t done in years and years. That was really neat. When I was out there I was thinking that it could be really meditative if the conditions were better. When you get into the rhythm of it, cross country is so calming and quiet. But in these conditions we were all just trying to not fall.
I didn’t know anyone here but Sarah, so I wasn’t sure how that would go. But we organized a carpool so by the time I got here I felt like I knew two more people. That helped. Normally I would be a little more intimidated with so many people I don’t know, but I don’t feel that way at all. It feels comfortable. We’re all in it together.

I’m questioning what I’m doing workwise right now. I’m in public relations and I’m having some internal turmoil. I don’t have joy in what I do right now and I know something needs to give. I need to make a change soon. So for me part of the motivation, and maybe even the timing as to why this weekend worked out, is that I’m having this crisis about what to do with my career, especially at this stage in my life. I’ve been doing what I’m doing for a while and I wonder whether this is the time to change. I feel like I’m discovering, trying to get some answers. Maybe by the end of the weekend I’ll have a little more clarity.”

“I have three kids, and they’re great and fun. My oldest is 26, and then I have an 18 year old, and then I kept going and we have an 11 year old. The 26 year old is out west and the other two are home with me and their dad.

I worked in IT for many years so I’ve never spent much time with women. I’m actually intimidated by women. So I thought, I’m going to go to this and I’m going to go by myself. I said to my husband, ‘there’s an opportunity for me to go someplace.’ And he said ‘it’s your Valentine’s gift – go. You never do anything for yourself.’

I thought, you know what, it would be really fun to meet some women. I want to get back into business by myself someday, so I need to learn about other people. Now that I’m here, the women are so open. The people I thought I would be intimidated by are lovely. It took away my fear of meeting new people.

My girlfriends were upset with me. I’ve only got a couple of girlfriends, but they said, ‘why didn’t you invite us?’ I said, ‘I think this is something I have to do alone. I need to push myself because if you come, I know what I’ll do. I’ll stick with you, or I’ll need to make sure you’re happy all the time, or if you don’t like the food I’ll feel upset. I just want to push myself to go out and meet people.’

I’m totally out of my comfort zone. I almost backed out. I almost decided I couldn’t do this. But it’s been so much fun.”

“I came to Bliss, selfishly, to be with my daughters. Leslie lives in Cobourg and Andrea and I live in London, so this was a good chance to meet halfway and have a nice time together. So often when we’re together, we’re with the family. My four grandkids range in age from 3 to 6, so it’s always busy and we never have much time to chat.

I’ve loved being here. We had a wonderful cross country ski this morning and the food has been phenomenal. There were lots of laughs at the circle last night. Painting rocks was funny, I had so much fun with that.

I’m looking forward to spending time together with my girls, getting to know other people, and I’d like to get outside some more. I know the skiing is over but I’d love to hike around the area.”

“I’ve never been a girly-girl. It has always been difficult for me to build relationships with women. That was the story I told myself for a really long time. Then I got into multiple businesses that were all about women, and I started to realize I could attract the right type of women. All those fears of cattiness and the stories about how women are—they didn’t even exist, because I was being the right kind of person to attract the right kinds of people. Being here at Bliss, it’s incredible to see how love can flourish in place of the stories that we tell ourselves about women.

I’ve always had this internal push and pull about doing what I want versus doing what I “should” do. In my family I’ve always been the rebel. But now when I look back, I can see the fruits of that struggle. I can see that always doing what I wanted to do—traveling, moving in with my partner before marriage, all of these things that my traditional Italian family was against—it all worked in a beautiful way to make me the person that I am. It strengthened me to be able to say “I did what I wanted to do and it was amazing.” So instead of seeing myself as a rebel—another story I told myself—I can see myself as someone who acts on the things that my heart is called to do. But it’s still something I work on every day.”

“This is my second time at Bliss. Sarah, one of the co-founders, is my sister-in-law. And this time I came here with another sister in law. I was really surprised that my cousin was here too because I didn’t know she was coming. Last time my mother was coming, and my aunt, and I had no idea. It’s hilarious, it’s like, ‘oh, my whole family is going to be there and I don’t even know.’ It turns out we don’t talk to each other much.”

“Gaby called me and said somebody gave her my number and she told me all about it and I said it sounded amazing. The whole concept of it all sounded amazing. Bringing women together and how amazing is it that we’re all connecting so well and we’re all so so different and we’re connecting so so well.

One person said I was starting a revolution, which I thought was really sweet. It was Natalie. She’s got really gorgeous eyes. She was surprised how open I am with what I do for a living and how I’m bringing it to the mainstream – how I’m using it to help women to become more aware as sexual beings.”

“Thirty years ago Tina and I worked together at the Y in Waterloo. But we lost track of each other. We reconnected about 2 years ago.

A lot of stuff happened to me in the last couple of years. So this was about getting away and getting out of my comfort zone. It was something I needed to do. What the heck, we’ll try anything once, right?

This weekend I took a lot of down time for myself. I didn’t go to all of the workshops. I rested, which is something I needed to do. Everybody takes what they need out of it. For me it was the quiet rest time. As Julie was saying, it was ‘time to listen to my soul.’”

“Tina and I met on a vacation with a bunch of girls about a year and a half ago. We haven’t seen each much since then, but she posted about the retreat on FB. She had said after her first Bliss retreat that it was ‘life-changing’ for her. And I thought, I need life changing. Actually, my life is pretty awesome. I just want to make it a little better. So here I am.

I don’t do well in crowds. I don’t like to speak in crowds. I didn’t share this weekend. That’s how I am. But I got so much out of being here, especially through the creativity activities. I’ve always said that I’m the least creative person in the world. I kind of made fun of the rock painting… until I did it, and then I freaking loved it! I’m going to rock paint all the time now. I realized that it’s like a meditation. It was fun and so relaxing.”

“Stephanie and I met through a mutual friend – he’s an actor and a singer. He was famous for his parties. He’d say, ‘oh, it’s just a small thing,” and then there would be 25 people and loads of food. And, because he’s an entertainer, out would come the keyboard and hey, let’s sing! So that’s how Stephanie and I met. She sat down beside me at one of the parties and we totally hit it off. We’ve been friends ever since.

We don’t see each other all the time because she doesn’t live in Toronto anymore. But when she auditions in Toronto sometimes she’ll come crash at my house. Or she’ll call me spontaneously and drag me out for some fancy event at TIFF or something. But there’s never a lot of notice. Usually she’s like, ‘you wanna go to this thing tomorrow?’ Sometimes I can’t rearrange things that fast, but it’s cool. We just pick up where we left off. There are friends you have like that and it’s fabulous.”

“I met Gaby at a Happy Healthy Women networking event in August 2014. She told me about Bliss B4 Laundry. I was immediately like, ‘I want in.’ I didn’t care what it took, I was going. I came and I presented on the Superwoman Syndrome and what you can do to battle it. That was my first Bliss retreat, and this is my third.

Since the first retreat, Bliss B4 Laundry has become more established in its identity. At first it was kind of a general retreat for women. Now it’s a place where women can come to find what they need, whether it’s to heal or to rest or something else. Even at the first retreat I talked with women who were in a lot of pain, but in confidential sessions. In subsequent retreats, women have become more comfortable sharing their pain and sharing their vulnerabilities with each other. They’ve been open to being vulnerable in workshops, at the dinner table, during the evening events and activities. More and more I see women feeling free to be themselves in this environment. And it works because Sarah and Gaby have this way of cultivating a supportive culture. It’s become a healing place more than a simple retreat.”

Alisa Blumberg

Alisa Blumberg

Dr. Alisa Blumberg, Chiropractor and Elite Master B.E.S.T. Practitioner, brings passion to her work that stems from having “walked a mile in her patients’ shoes” – whether they be those that pinch in physical pain or the ones that rub with worry, stress and self-doubt.

As a Chiropractor, Dr. Blumberg believes whole-heartedly in every body’s ability to heal itself when interference is removed. She is committed not only to treating people; but to educating, empowering and collaborating with them on their journey towards optimal health and absolute wellness. A patient once described her work as ‘Facilitating Little Miracles’ – a description that she loves, and an opportunity that she cherishes.

A graduate of UofT, and Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, Dr. Blumberg intends to keep learning for life. Her goal is to study the healing techniques of the future, and apply them today. Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique, which she has focused on for over 6 years, and practices along with more ‘traditional’ chiropractic methods, fits the bill. Its specific protocols allow for evaluating and balancing the way the brain receives and responds to physical and energetic stresses. It then uses a gentle, hands-on, energy balancing ’adjustment’ to tune-in the body to its natural healing power.

Candice Gallinger

Candice Gallinger

Candice Gallinger is a creative writer and natural healer currently learning Reiki and palmistry. After working in the Architecture and Interior Design industry for over 8 years, she felt a deep longing to make a drastic change. During this time she also faced dietary health issues that directed her awareness to the needs of her body.

Upon awakening to her inner wisdom and heart-centered desires, she began a journey of deeper self-discovery. Through healthy eating, spending time in nature, daily meditation and writing, she has been able to overcome her feeling of disconnection and once again feel whole.

One thing Candice can attest to is that these changes take time and we need to be gentle with ourselves in the process. By tuning in to the moments that open your heart and send waves of love pouring out, life once again becomes a magical adventure.

Candice strives to help others tap into their higher wisdom and gain a deeper sense of connection so that they too feel empowered to make the changes they desire.

Public Health Nurse

As a mother of two young boys and a public health nurse I am passionate about healthy eating. With growing concerns of climate change I have moved towards a mainly plant-based diet as a means of achieving reduction in our family’s carbon emissions and achieving an improvement in our health. I love being in the kitchen combining fresh flavours and ingredients sourced from our extra large veggie patch out back. As a busy working mother I recognize that finding balance is important. I won’t always be able to put that ideal meal on the table and that’s alright. I’ll get back at it tomorrow. That’s the thing about food, the next meal is right around the corner.

Jacynthe (Jaz) Villemaire

Jacynthe (Jaz) Villemaire

Reiki Master and Spiritual Coach

Jacynthe (Jaz) Villemaire is a Reiki Master and Spiritual Coach. After graduating from University, she built a successful career in communications and training development with the Government of Canada. But although the salary and benefits were excellent, there was a big piece missing: her creative, caring and intuitive heart could not find a meaningful outlet and got lost in all the paper trails and policies. She painfully discovered that no matter your business drive, your social success or the amount of your knowledge, if you don’t follow the calling of your heart you will feel empty and dissatisfied. Being out of alignment with your heart’s desire brings stress, tension, depression and physical aches and pains. Enough was enough.

In December of 2013, she took the biggest leap of faith and quit her job to create the soulfully inspired life she desired – and she has not regretted it one bit.

Jaz is an avid and constant student of Life. She studied with masters in Canada, the USA and Brazil. She loves to take her dog, Maya, for leisurely walks near the St. Lawrence River, and she travels as often as possible. For her 40th birthday, she celebrated by trekking solo in London, UK to soak up the historical – and modern – vibes of that wonderful city.

Her services include various practices of Reiki, soul coaching, Chakradance, intuitive readings, Akashic records, tarot and oracle readings. Jaz teaches women how to live a joyful and inspired life by tapping into their intuition and clearing the hang-ups based on fear and self-worth issues.

Reiki Master, Certified Crystal Healer, Life Force Energy Healer, Empathic Intuitive/Medium, Spiritual Teacher & Self-Help Mentor.

Jennifer Foster is a Reiki Master, Certified Crystal Healer, Life Force Energy Healer, Empathic Intuitive/Medium, Spiritual Teacher and (through personal experience) Self-Help Mentor.

After years of self-sabotaging ways due to sexual abuse in childhood, Jennifer L Foster, turned her life around through Reiki, her connection to Spirit and her love of crystals.

Surrounded by her beautiful children, loving husband, supportive friends and family she regained her own power and began embracing her life with an attitude of joy and gratitude.

After a trip to the emergency room following several panic attacks and very low energy, Jennifer decided to see an intuitive energy healer and has never looked back. She was told that she herself was an empath and a healer. This shocking revelation led her to begin healing her past and the emotional pain attached to it by balancing her chakras through energy work. Her passion is empowering others and surfacing the tools within them to heal themselves.

Kathy Lee

Kathy Lee

Kathy Lee is a Yoga Instructor and Studio Manager at the Yoga Sanctuary in Toronto.

Nature, celebration and connection are three threads that weave throughout Kathy Lee’s life. Yoga arrived in Kathy’s life following a back injury, which left her feeling fearful of surgery and incapable of participating in her favourite outdoor activities without pain. Deciding to postpone surgery Kathy began attending regular yoga classes. Letting go of fear and allowing for slow and gradual physical improvement over a number of years eventually led Kathy to wholeheartedly complete her yoga teacher training in 2013. She now shares her experience and compassion in her work as the Manager and yoga teacher at The Yoga Sanctuary Danforth.

Kathy also spent 12 years living with her husband in an intentional community where they shared the joys of planning and preparing weekly meals and celebrations for up to 75 children and adults. She also worked in her community as a consensus facilitator; organic gardener with a weekly market; and as an environmental educator for a non-profit grassroots group dedicated to protecting a local river.

Kathy believes that yoga invites us to a deeper understanding of ourselves, which then ripples outwards in all directions connecting us to others, to the earth, to the universe.

Kita Szpak

Publicist and Writer

Kita Szpak is a professional publicist and writer whose promotion of artists such as Alan Jackson, Jo Dee Messina, Matt Dusk and Andrea Martin, showcases in Memphis and Nashville, and event spectacles like Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson World Tour, have given her first-hand experience with what it takes to be successful.

Ironically, the opposite happened in Kita’s personal life. Two marriage breakdowns and the awful feeling of not being able to fit in anywhere prompted Kita to search out the whole idea of happiness. It certainly wasn’t finding her.

Kita’s two university degrees, studies and research into philosophy, positive psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience led to the writing of You’re Special Wherever You Are, a U.S. award-finalist children’s book (Kita’s three sons first heard her stories) and later the co-written adult-themed Tipping Point to Happiness. Kita’s latest book The SIMPLE Life: Shiny Objects Not Required sums up the key elements contributing to a happy life once the years of clutter are examined and swept away.

Kita continues to write and contribute to various magazines as well as be interviewed by radio and TV as a “happiness expert”. To find her, look outside. She loves the outdoors and is an avid runner – she just ran the Boston Marathon.

Perri van Rossem

Perri van Rossem

Yoga Teacher, Therapist

Perri van Rossem is the owner of the Living Yoga Studio. She is a Yoga Teacher, a Therapist, a Student and a Spiritual Seeker. In 1990 yoga found Perri. It became immediately obvious that yoga naturally blended Perri’s passion for a healthy, vital body with her philosophical pursuit of understanding the nature of reality, life and the mind.

The emphasis in her teaching remains in breathing and the fundamentals of good body alignment, and mental focus. Perri’s passion for sharing the deep wisdom of the ancient philosophy of Yoga takes her classes beyond the physical practice alone. She considers Yoga to be a practical philosophy that offers tools to assist us on our everyday journey through life. To think of yoga as an exercise system for the body alone is underestimating and limiting yoga’s overall potential. Perri imbues her classes with a blend of physical, mental and spiritual teachings.

“When we free the body, and release the mind, we allow ourselves to let go of all that no longer serves us.”

Living Yoga Studios is dedicated to bringing health and well being into your life through sharing the philosophy and practices of Yoga. We are committed to providing quality instruction and guidance to suit each student’s needs.http://livingyogastudio.ca
